The day started out wih a couple of postponements due to no wind. We finally got the race underway about 1230 (1 hour and 10 minutes late) for our class. We had a great (albeit slow) start in the middle of the line covering more than half the fleet with tons of clean air. The boats that fought for the committee boatstayed away but were quickly passed by Dennis Conner on BQuest II. We remained in second place for quite a while moving along nicely in the light wind, right up until we picked up kelp. Peter did a nice job of clearing the kelp from the rudder, but we could not get the kelp off the keel. This required a backdown as we got passed by many boats. We picked up quite a bit of speed after removing the kelp and did a great job behind the island. After dousing the spi and heading back upwind, we had great boat speed until we picked up the next batch of kelp. This we could not clear and carried it back across the finish line. Winds on the final leg were out of due north - the exact direction we were heading. We crossed the finish line at 1930 - 7 hours after our start. If was a fun day of sailing with one of the most beautiful sunsets imaginable! We finished the day 12/16 about 1:21 (hours and minutes!) behind.
