Finally back to racing in San Diego after about a month off. It turned out to be a beautiful Spring day, warm and sunny with high pressure building. The race got underway with next to no wind coming off the shore very deep. We started very slowly just behind BQuest at the boat (the entire fleet moving about .5 kts!). We started going a little high then launched the new asymmetrical spi. As we finally moved to the oncoming wind-line, the new breeze that was in it was in front, so we doused the spi and went back up with the genoa. We stuck right behind Airwaves for the reach out to SD1. By the time we finally made it out to Buoy 1, we were trailing BQuest, Eclipse, French Bred, El Sueno, Houn Dawg, and Airwaves, with the rest of the fleet (all considerably faster) behind us. We gybed at Buoy 1 and were on a genoa reach all the way down to the Navy Mooring Buoy, with the fleet staying in position the whole way, inching our way close to Houn Dawg. We tacked our way up to SD6, rounding in position, and reached down to SD1. All the boats were in order except for Eclipse who had fallen back to 4th behind Eclipse. We did a gybe set around SD1 and sailed down under spi to Navy Mooring Buoy. We doused, and hardened up (passing Airwaves now under main alone), heading in to the beach until we got to the layline and tacked to the finish. We crossed the line a minute behind Houn Dawg correcting out to 4/12, behind BQuest, French Bred and El Sueno. What a great day!
